Decembrie in Brasov

December 12- 16 was a week full of Biblionet events in Brasov County Library. In the attic of the library took place the IT/LIB course for the librarians in round III, the SENSE project – services for seniors took place, while two local libraries in the county already organizes ceremonies of the new services being opened as a result of the FNLS courses.

I welcomed the announcement and the invitation to participate at the Christmas celebration from the Cristian local library, where librarians began creativity workshops for children and adults and managed to win the hearts of all those who are passionate about beauty. Thursday I was ready to get to Cristian locality and in the afternoon I was on my way there. On the road a dense fog enshrouded everything, making the landscape unrecognizable. After I passed some ghostly buildings I was able to identify the place to get off and I got to the library. Inside I was expected by breathlessly children and by the Granny, as the children call the librarian, grandmother of two girls. The librarian was the ceremony master. Also present were a parent and Antonia Roman, City Hall Secretary. The library was completely changes, adorned with a beautiful green tree filled with Christmas ornaments made by children from paper and tinsel with a long, long woven of gum packs. This ornament was on a place of honor, proof of the artist’s inventiveness and patience, none other than Santa Claus. On the shelves there were ornaments and small green trees decorated with fake snow by the parents and kids with talent and imagination.

The children set on chairs on both sides of the Christmas tree and one by one, full of excitement, read, recited and sang carols. They made mistakes, stopped, resumed, but beyond the small mistakes, I felt they put their hearts on this celebration. The librarian came with the celebration idea. She chose the poems, and then the children divided them into stanzas and chose to learn and recite their favorite lines. In its effort to organize, Mrs. Corina Oltean was supported by the mayor who paid for the decoration and gifts and Granny oversaw the smooth running of the celebration. The celebration wasn’t an official one, not everything went perfectly, but I know it was organized with all their hearts and that was the best thing about it. It was the most successful celebration that I have seen.

Let me tell you a secret: the most talented of all participants in the celebration was Santa Claus. He came unexpectedly with a sack on his back full of gifts. He didn’t ask the children if they were good or naughty, but if they went at the library and if they like to read. I admit, I was overwhelmed by this question. Then he added that he came flying with his sledge at the library and he just went in flight about the Little Prince’s planet who was just watering his flower. The children who did not read “Little Prince” were advised to talk with the librarian who certainly knows the shelf where the book is. Weren’t you too mesmerized by the same story? I think you were. The children were completely fascinated by Santa. They received gifts, made photos, sang carols, told jokes and spent time together. Didn’t I just tell you it was the most beautiful celebration?

Also at the celebration, the legal counsel from the City Hall was present. Talking with her, I discovered in the young legal expert, a passionate advocate of reading, which often comes at the local library from Cristian to borrow books. She doesn’t have time to go at the County Library in Brasov where she lives. Knowing how busy young active people are, I suggested her to use audio-books in her car while on the road, managing this way to do two things at the same time. She accepted my suggestion with enthusiasm, and she decided that the City Hall will buy audio-books for the library to borrow. She also joined the creativity workshops and planning meeting with the librarian.

Interest in creating decorative objects is shared not only by children and City Hall employees but also by parents. At the end they finally arrived to take their children home. A mother, teacher by profession, told me how happy she is that the library also started interesting activities. The reason was simple: in winter, when it gets dark earlier and it’s too cold outside for children to play, the library offers an alternative to spend time doing something useful.

These words confirmed me that Corina’s initiative was more than helpful, in support of parents and education, managing to build a solid relationship with the community and authorities.

Congratulations to Corina, she deserves them!
