During 6 – 18 May, Biblonet organized a series of 7 regional meetings to explain in detail the process through which the county libraries can participate in the program and how to fill in the registration forms. 200 librarians and local administration representatives from 38 out of 41 Romanian counties participated in these information sessions. The county libraries showed a great interest in the program, most of them declaring to be ready and eager to be part of Biblionet.
The county libraries representatives understood how the community will benefit with the help of Biblionet program, meaning that citizens will have access to all types of information and the librarians will become best resource-persons to help them with their information needs.
There are also county libraries that acknowledged the fact that they need more time to be able to register in the program. Some of the reasons that determine the libraries not to be part of the first round are: the library is in the process of reorganization and automation; lack of human resources; organization issues; asmall number of localities in the county can meet the minimum eligibility criteria.
Biblionet had a significant support from the Minister of Culture Mr. Theodor Paleologu, who encouraged the local authorities to sustain their libraries in the process of becoming a part of the program.
By June the 4th, the deadline for application receiving, 30 county libraries completed the process: Alba, Arges, Bacau, Bihor, Botosani, Braila, Brasov, Buzau, Cluj, Constanta, Dambovita, Dolj, Galati, Giurgiu, Gorj, Harghita, Hunedoara, Ialomita, Iasi, Maramures, Neamt, Prahova, Salaj, Suceava, Teleorman, Timis, Tulcea, Vaslui, Valcea, Vrancea.
The applications will be evaluated by the IREX team, site visits will be made and the final decision will be made by an independent evaluation committee. The 12 county libraries that will be part of the first round of Biblionet program will be publicly announced by the Minister of Culture on July 20th.
