Table of contents: Basics of Film Adaptation Theory (Adaptation as Intertextual Dialogism; From Intertextuality to Transtextuality; Types of Adaptations); The Narrative of Fiction and Film (Narrative Structure in Novel and Film; Types of Novels/Filmic Narration); The Semiotics of Film (Adaptation as Intersemiotic Translation; Cinematic Syntagmas; The Aesthetics of Film Language). The film production is a complex process that opens many possibilities for critical analysis, invites multiple approaches, some of which being the area of interest of the present study Topological Adaptations: from Text to Film/from Film to Text. A Theoretical Approach. Based on the growing popularity of film adaptations, the focus of this study is to identify the specific techincal mechanisms that are involved in the translation of fictional and non-fictional sources (novel and historical event) for the big screen in a process called adaptation; also the the book had tried to dismantle the criticism that film adaptations have received when regarded as a secondary genre by the defendors of literary studies. The second concern is the reverse parcours taken by a film to a fictional narrative (novel, short story) in a process called novelization. The stages of construction include the deconstrction of the narrative of the novel source, followed by the encoding of the new text for the visual medium through multiple strategies of compression, actualization, augmentation, addition, concretization. The dominant critical and theoretical concepts operating in adaptation studies (formalism, structuralism, narratology, semiotics) as well as elements of film morphology and syntax have been validated in film analysis in a corpus of over twenty titles. The novelty and originality of this book consists in its very positioning as a niche book: despite the popularity of film as a media genre, film adaptations have not benefited numerous theoretical and applied studies on the book market in Romania.
